Traditional Cooking Workshop – Fasting Meal
20 November 2021, 12:00 – 16:00
ASTRA Open air museum, the sheepfold from Rășinari
The cooking workshop will bring us closer to the traditions and significance of the period of time before Christmas. At the beginning of the fasting period, local women from Sebeșu de Jos will prepare vegetarian cabbage rolls, which will remind us of the autumn preparations, as these cabbage rolls are the ones for which sour cabbage is used for the first time, but also of the preparations for Christmas, when meat cabbage rolls are prepared.
At the beginning of this preparation period, food was also traditionally adapted to help cleanse the body by only eating fruit and vegetables. During autumn, the ingredients were plenty, so that there was a variety of food that could be prepared. Restraining from eating animal source foods was seen as a way of being submissive and focusing on the spiritual side of life while preparing for God’s Birth.

We invite you to take part in this tradition of preparing food for fasting and to interact with local women who will tell you more about this period.
The new exhibition circuit, including the homestead and sheepfold form Rășinari and the homestead from Sebeșu de Jos, will also familiarize you to the life of the communities of the two villages by means of new technologies used to present some of the objects exhibited in the museum.
