ASTRA Open air museum, the homestead from Sebeșu de Jos

The community from SebeÈ™u de Jos will showcase it most important traditional manifestation in the ASTRA Open Air Museum: the Chain Dance from Rusca. In their locality, it takes place on the Pentecost Sunday, the custom dating back to the 18th century. It is not an ordinary dance, but a dance with knots (horă înnodată), where the chain of dancers form several knots. The dance has a foreman who creates those knots skillully, skills being also required in order to untie them without breaking the chain.

Each year on Pentecost, the villagers from Sebeșu de Jos gather on the Rusca plateau, this being a perfect opportunity for them to meet their relatives from Albina (Timiș), a village located in another part of the country, where they were given lands after the First World War.

We will get to know the members of the community, as well as their local occupation: that of using slumgum to make candles.
