The Memory of Rășinari in facts and dishes

Rășinari is one of the municipalities in Marginimea Sibiului whose main traditional occupation has been shepherding, along with practicing woodworking crafts, agriculture, and animal husbandry (sheep, cattle, and goats).

In the middle of the 20th century, in 1957, the year in which the recipes below were collected, when teams of ethnographers have researched the area, there were about 16,000 sheep. The inhabitants whose only occupation has been shepherding had around 80-100 sheep each. The other inhabitants, farmers, or workers, had between 5 and 10 sheep each. At that time, Rășinari had 26 sheepfolds, 22 of which were privately owned and 4 in association. The inventory used to prepare sheep's milk included various items made by the owners themselves or bought at the fair from wood craftsmen who had come from the Apuseni mountains.
